Introducing our 2009 Boy & Girl of the Year

Marshall Magill, our 2009 Boy of the Year was diagnosed with Advanced Stage Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) in February of 2007 at the age of 12. ALCL is a very aggressive cancer. The first sign of trouble came about a month before his diagnosis; Marshall said his stomach hurt. The anguish upon receiving such a diagnosis is unbelievable. Marshall underwent a year of chemotherapy, quite an intense and life-changing year for his family. He was on a three week cycle, one (week of medicine, two weeks to recover) the whole year. Besides the IV medicines, which meant trips to the hospital, there were also many pills to be taken at home. Imagine the first day of junior high being a day for going to the clinic for chemo. Marshall is now in the 8th grade at Veritas School in Newberg, OR. He enjoys working hard to earn good grades. In his free time he like to run....a lot. Last year he ran track and cross country. He went to the state cross country finals and had the 15th fastest time in Oregon (just 9 months after finishing treatment). That shows what an amazing job the recent chemo drugs can do. Besides running, Marshall loves playing street basketball, hanging out with friends, and traveling to new and exciting places.
Kamryn Berk, our 2009 Girl of the Year was born on November 11, 1999. A month shy of her 2nd birthday Kamryn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normaly fight infections. During her treatments one of several side effects was the inability to fight colds, fevers and other common illnesses. This, as well as many other conditions, made her a common figure at Legacy Children's Hospital. At the Hospital she had the company of her favorite stuffed dog "Boo" and her doll, "Baby Baby" At one point her little brother needed to get stitches as a result of a household accident. Kamryn gave him both "Boo" and "Baby Baby" for his trip to the emergency room. Kamryn is now in the 4th grade, one full year ahead of her age. She is a great soccoer player, competing against girls up to 2 years older. Kamryn's idol is Mia Hamm. Wanting to follow in her lead, Kamryn intends to win a soccer gold medal. An ambitious girl, she also want to find a cure for cancer and be a veterinarian. On Kamryn's 9th birthday she donated all of her presents to children in the hospital, because as she said "They really need the toys, I don't."
