By sharing your story, you might encourage a newly-diagnosed patient, comfort a family member, or inspire someone to support the Society's mission. In addition to the Society's Life Mosaic, we offer other meaningful ways to share your story and connect with others: |
| 3. Become a First Connection Volunteer First Connection is a peer-to-peer support program for newly-diagnosed patients and their families. Speaking by telephone with someone who has "been through it," patients obtain valuable information about coping, community resources, and Society programs. First Connection volunteers are blood cancer survivors at least one year out of treatment who complete a comprehensive training program before they are matched with patients with similar diagnoses. Each match consists of one or two telephone conversations. To learn more about this meaningful volunteer opportunity, call Stacy Martin or Toni Poppe at (888) 345-4572. 4. Be an Honored Patient Honored patients are blood cancer survivors (either in treatment or remission) who inspire event participants and donors. Serving as living symbols of hope, honored patients attend events and encourage participants with their words, pictures, and/or drawings. Volunteers' time committment varies by event. To learn more about the Washington/Alaska Chapter's honored patient program, contact Isabelle Haggard, Patient Aid Coordinator, at (888) 345-4572 ext. 115. 5. Participate in Events In addition to the wide variety of Patient Services events offered throughout the year, we invite you to participate in the Washington/Alaska Chapter's fundraising events, including: | Light The Night® Walk The Society's nationwide evening walk to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants carry lighted balloons--white for survivors, red for supporters--creating a visual reminder of our mission. The casual two-to-three mile walks are held in September, which is Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month.
