CLINIC TO CLASSROOM

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society sponsors an annual conference to provide practical suggestions about educating the pediatric cancer survivor.  Parents, school nurses, school counselors, teachers, school administrators and pediatric oncology workers are encouraged to attend. 




 

From Clinic to Classroom:
Facilitating School Success for the Child with Cancer

A FREE education program for teachers, school nurses, school counselors, administrators, parents, and pediatric oncology workers


Has been postponed until Spring 2010, more details to come...




Goal
: To educate school personnel, parents, and health care professionals on the cognitive and late effects of childhood cancer treatment to improve the transition of childhood cancer survivors from clinic to classroom.

Educational Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the treatment of childhood cancers and the side effects of survivorship
  • Recognize the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges that childhood cancer survivors face
  • Identify laws protecting the rights of these children
  • Develop strategies to help meet students' short- and long-term educational needs
  • Access resources that support schools and the families of childhood cancer survivors

Continuing Education Information for Nurses, Social Workers, and School CounselorsApproval for nurses has been obtained by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's national office under provider number CEP 5832 to award 5.0 continuing education contact hours through the California Board of Registered Nurses; for social workers under provider number 1105 to award 5.0 contact hours through the Association of Social Work Boards. School counselor contact hours provided by the school counseling services unit of Montgomery County Public Schools.
