More lives are being saved as cancer research increases, but treatments that have produced these remarkable survival rates have come with a cost. As many as half of cancer survivors experience long-term negative effects of their treatments. Some are chronic conditions that affect quality of life. Others, which might occur years later, can be life threatening.
What patients need now is for current therapies to be made less harmful withough sacrificing curative power.
Over the next three years, LLS will invest $5 million specifically focused on quality of life issues. To jumpstart the effort, an anonymous benefactor will match gifts up to $250,000 through early 2010.
