Wellington, FL - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held its 7th Annual Cocktail Party and Silent Auction on February 12th at Grant Farms in Wellington, Florida.  This year's event raised more than $66,000 to support the organization's mission.

Event Chairwoman, Mary Ann Grant welcomed guests and introduced Honorary Chairwoman, Dr. Melissa Singer. Dr. Singer spoke about her work as a pediatric hematologist oncologist and how important blood cancer research is. She then introduced Honored Hero, 8 year old, DJ Bochel who is currently in remission from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. DJ's mom, Mary Beth spoke about what it was like to follow DJ through diagnosis, treatment and recovery and expressed her sincere appreciation to all of the participants, donors and supporters. Equestrian of the Year committee member, Susie Dutta and Anna Tillman presented DJ with a giant stuffed alligator, Lego's and more!

Patrons of the event enjoyed cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, light dinner and a silent auction of over 70 items. At the close of the auction, Melanie Pai was awarded the title 2009 "Equestrian of the Year" for her efforts in raising nearly $11,000. Melanie became a participant in honor of her son, Kyle, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia when he was six years old. Don Later was announced as the runner up, raising more than $4,500 for the LLS.
