Society Ties, the young professionals' committee of the New York City Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, is thrilled to announce the success of their annual Black Tie & Black Jack event on February 28, 2009 at CAPITALE. Over 650 guests tested their luck at games of chance and won big, raising more than $150,000 for the fight against blood cancer. Thank you for all of your support.

Are you looking for a way to help in LLS's mission? Enjoy planning events? Society Ties is now looking for new committee members! Please contact Courtney Roosa at (646) 660-9038 or courtney.roosa@lls.org to find out more information and about upcoming events.

Planning Committee

Event Chair - Steven Rubin

Steven Rubin, a Regional Director of Revenue for Kimpton Hotel Group, joined the Society Ties team in 2007. Steven has attended the annual fundraiser for the past six years and felt, given his background, he could help contribute to the event. Compelling him to join the fight against cancer was his mother's diagnosis with Breast Cancer on September 28, 2000. Cindy's cancer is now in complete remission, however Steven is increasingly aware of the number of friends and family who continue to be affected by cancer, driving his involvement in LLS. Steven lives in New York City with his wife Lara Harris, who designed this year's invitations.

Society Ties Chairwoman - Gayle Silverman

Gayle Silverman currently works at Pfizer and is serving as chairwoman of Society Ties for the second year in a row. Since she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2001 she has been very active with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society both as a fundraiser and an inspiring guest speaker. She has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research, as well as inspired thousands of others to join in the fight against cancer. When asked to give advice to someone after being affected by cancer she replied, "Take advantage of every day. Don't concentrate on whether or not there may be a few days or hours left, but make each moment that you have truly count." Her motto is "live every day as if it were your last, because one of these days it will be. And most importantly, make sure you have no regrets, then you know you have lived your life to the fullest and made it the best you possibly could." Her cancer is now in complete remission.
