About the Foundation
Established in 2002, the Virginia Sheldon Jerome Foundation serves as a 501(c)(3) memorial foundation founded by Joe Kelley, vice president of government and public affairs at Eli Lilly and Company, to honor his late wife, Shelley (below).
Shelley was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in June 2001. She was an ambassador of good will and continued to help others with the disease while undergoing the obstacles of her own illness. She was a fighter who was determined not to let leukemia beat her. Unfortunately, her chemotherapy treatments and bone marrow transplants failed to cure her AML.
Foundation Purpose
The foundation strongly believes that cures are out there somewhere and, in time, they will be found through the continued dedication of research and funding. In order to meet this goal, the foundation focuses on:
Raising money to find cures
Blood cancer-related advocacy, with the focus on educating Congress on blood cancer-funding issues
Funding new and promising treatments via The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Translational Research Program
To fulfill the third focus area, the foundation serves as a principle sponsor of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Congressional Honors Program. The Congressional Honors Program recognizes public servants who campaign for increased research funds, primarily in the area of blood-related cancers. Through the Congressional Honors Program, the Translational Research Program was developed in consultation with the National Cancer Institue. This program provides early-stage support for clinical research on leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
