Man & Woman of the Year

Recruitment is underway for 2010 Man & Woman of the Year candidates. If you'd like to nominate someone to vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year, contact Kayla Kovarna at kayla.kovarna@lls.org.

CONGRATULATIONS

to the 2009

MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Joe Sergi and Patricia Giannoulias

The 2009 Man & Woman of the Year along with the Boy & Girl of the Year Michael Gaston Jr. and Katie Hausman at the Grand Finale Gala

The 2009 Man & Woman of the Year campaign was an AMAZING year!  On May 15, 2009 at the Chicago Cultural Center despite the economy not one, not two, but THREE records were broken.  Joe Sergi broke the previous record for most raised by a male candidate and Patricia Giannoulias broke the record for most raised for female candidates.  Both Joe and Patricia are competing for the title of National Man & Woman of the Year which will be announced in July.

In addition, the 2009 class of candidates broke all previous group fundraising totals!  On behalf of all of us at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®, congratulations to the candidates for your dedication in making 2009 a record breaking year!  Together you have made a difference in the lives of those affected by blood cancer.

*Check back after June 30, 2009 to see official totals

Congratulations to Roxanne Tata, COO LifeSource, on her title as the 2009 First Runner Up!

The Campaign

Man & Woman of the Year is a unique and exciting campaign. For 10 weeks, candidates gain "votes" by raising money in a variety of ways including writing letters, hosting events and securing items for a silent auction. The man and woman candidate who raise the most "votes" are named Illinois Man & Woman of the Year!

Candidates support this campaign for many reasons. Special inspiration is provided by patients and survivors of blood cancer, the Boy and Girl of the Year. Michael Gaston Jr. and Katie Hausman are our 2009 Boy & Girl of the Year! Both Michael and Katie were diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia while very young. Today Michael is 8 years old and is in remission and Katie is 6 years old and has successfully been off treatment for 3 years!

Nationally an estimated 86% of funds raised go directly back to our mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
