Man & Woman of the Year 2009 is here!
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Massachusetts 2009 Man & Woman of the Year!
| | The Man & Woman of the Year is a 10 week campaign during which candidates vying for the title of 2009 Man & Woman of the Year are judged on a philanthropic basis in generating funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Every dollar raised is counted as one vote. The two candidates with the most votes are honored as the 2009 Man & Woman of the Year.
Candidates are further inspired to succeed by the Boy & Girl of the Year. These blood cancer patients provide inspiration and remind candidates of the importance of their efforts.

The Man & Woman of the Year campaign is an exciting ten week fundraising competition among people in the community who compete for the honor of being named Man or Woman of the Year. Candidates are judged solely on a philanthropic basis. The Man and Woman who raises the most funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will be named Man and Woman of the Year! Candidates run in honor of extraordinary patient survivors; the Boy & Girl of the Year.
The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the Society's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The money raised goes to fund vital research and patient services.
The winners receive a media prize package announcing their accomplishiment, as well as other prizes. The national Man & Woman of the Year winners are featured in a full page ad in USA Today.
Candidates raise money through letter writing campaigns, an on-line fundraising website (provided by the Society), parties and more. A Fundraising Workshop is offered to help participants get started. Candidates will receive personalized campaign planning assistance and ongoing support from the campaign coordinator. Past participants are also available to give tips on fundraising and encouragement throughout the process.

Boy & Girl of the Year
All participants raise funds in honor of the Boy & Girl of the Year. The 2009 honorees are Paisley Blu MacNeil and Jake Maguire. Both Paisley and Jake contracted Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Jake is through his treatment and is cancer free. Paisley is in the maintenance stage and will complete her treatment in 2009!
History
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year campaign began in 1990 in San Francisco to honor John Spencer, a valued employee at Hastings Clothier in San Francisco and a Society volunteer. Spencer passed away of leukemia at the age of 39. It was in John's memory that Hastings began supporting the Society's Northern California Chapter with the San Francisco Man & Woman of the Year event. Now, more than 40 Man & Woman of the Year campaigns occur across the nation, making this a highly visable fundraising event.
The Reason
Although someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes, there is great hope for the future. The Society is the worlds largest voluntary health organization dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
