2010 Relay Information is IN!
Leukemia is the no. 1 child killing disease. Ten times as many adults as children are stricken with leukemia. Lymphoma rates have nearly doubled since the 1970's. Police officers always want to "catch a killer" and the Houston Police Department (HPD) Bicycle Relay Team's goal is to "arrest these killers" and accelerate The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's fight against blood cancers. The Houston Police Bicycle Relay Team will begin their 1,400 mile bike ride across West Texas, through Mexico, over the Rockies and into Denver. This is an unparalleled volunteer effort to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. You can participate in this life saving effort through sponsorship of these hard working officers and civilians. Including the donations from last year, the total contributions given through the Houston Police Bicycle Relay Team have exceeded $4.2 million. Because of generous giving like this, continuing research has resulted in survival rates for the most common form of childhood leukemia rising from 4% in 1960 to 85% in 2003! Further, leukemia researchers pioneered and developed most major cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, transfusion and radiation therapies, bone marrow and stem cell transplants- all made possible by donations given by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Leukemia research is looked upon as the window to the cure of all cancer! You can help by making a donation towards the fundraising goal of the HPD Bicycle Relay Team by clicking on their name below. When I got the news that I had cancer, I knew that the success or failure of my treatments was in a large part going to be out of my control. I knew that I had the support of my family and close friends; however, I also knew that I needed as many prayers as possible in order to beat this formidable opponent into remission. I made the decision to not keep my cancer a secret from those that I worked with. When I started the first of six scheduled chemo treatments on May 5, 2009, the prayer network was in full swing. Thanks to the love and prayers of everyone, I only had to complete five of the scheduled six chemotherapy treatments because on July 1, 2009, I was advised that I was in full remission...cancer free. Although I am fully aware that a cure is not currently available for Follicular Lymphoma, I am certain that with the support, both financial and spiritually of others, there soon will be a cure...God willing! During the time that the disease and chemo were attacking my body I did not allow it to change my life or detour my "cup is half full" way of looking at the situation. I was blessed in that I only missed one day of work due to the side effects of the chemo. During this time, I also realized how truly fortunate I was to have the support of a loving family as well as the support of my friends, colleagues, and even strangers. I was in excellent physical condition and had no signs of being ill before being diagnosed with cancer. This just reinforced what I had been told by many...CANCER will attack anyone, at any time, and without warning! The most important thing that got me through this ordeal was prayer, a positive attitude and the support of family, friends, and strangers alike. Many of the men and women of the HPD Bicycle Relay Team were such strangers until they stepped forward and supported me during my time of need. I am extremely honored that many of them are once again riding in honor of my father, who has Leukemia, and me. The HPD Bicycle Relay Team needs FINANCIAL support in order to reach its fund raising goals. Through efforts like theirs, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society will ultimately find a cure for these blood born cancers! PLEASE JOIN ME IN SUPPORTING THE HPD BICYCLE RELAY TEAM'S EFFORTS TO FIND A CURE!!
