The officers and members of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) have renewed their commitment year after year to funding The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) research efforts. Through creative fundraising efforts, the UFCW's total contributions to LLS's research efforts are over the $31 million mark, with over $2 million raised in the U.S. and Canada in 2009.
UFCW members have walked, danced, canoed, raffled, run and more - making the UFCW one of the top contributors to LLS, which is dedicated to finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. In 2008, the UFCW is marked the 25th anniversary of the union's committment to LLS.

Over 200 local unions and the union's international headquarters participate in fundraising events. Every dollar raised by the UFCW is used for blood cancer research. In 2004, LLS recongized the UFCW with a Lifetime Achievement Award for its years of commitment and contributions to LLS's mission.Researchers have focused on developing new treatment approaches that target and eradicate only the cancer cells without destroying healthy, normal cells. Such types of treatment are less toxic and therefore less dangerous and should result in higher cure rates.
Currently, the UFCW is funding critical research at leading universities throughout the United States and Canada, as LLS moves closer to finding a cure with the support of UFCW contributions.
