At the age of five, Jacob McLean was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in February 2002. Following his diagnosis, Jake endured spinal taps, daily chemotherapy, and all of the unpleasant side effects caused by medication. When other kids were learning to ride a bike and pick out a lunch box for kindergarten, Jake spent numerous days, nights and weeks fighting for his life in the hospital. Karen, Jake's mother, says, ‘Jake has maintained the most positive attitude through all of his young life. His attitude has continually shone; even on the most difficult days. Jakey has had an incredible amount of courage, strength, and faith. He has never questioned "why me?"...he has only questioned "what do I need to do to feel better?" He has continually pushed forward with CURE on his mind.' After bearing 3 ˝ years of treatment, Jake is in remission and will celebrate his four-year anniversary of taking his final dose of chemotherapy on April 5th - a day his family will celebrate for eternity!
Now 12-years-old, Jake will finish 6th grade this spring and looks forward to attending Junior High with his friends next fall. He enjoys baseball, football, fishing, video games, and playing with his dog MagieJoAngelSnickerSpotMcLean ...which the family calls Magie for short. Jake dreams of traveling, some days wanting to be an oncologist when he grows up and other days...a race car driver.
Jake lives in Stillwater, MN with his Mom and Dad (Karen & Steve), along with his two sisters, Taylor (17) and Jordyn (15). The McLean family says, "Jake is an inspiration to many, a friend to all and a really wonderful young boy. Our family is looking forward to being a part of this year's Regatta. We are truly honored to have our son chosen as this years honored crew. We look forward to sharing our story, our life, and our son with you as we strive to find a cure for Leukemia. Life is good."
