Local Services

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is committed to reaching out in meaningful ways to those with leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma. Programs have been developed to meet the needs of patients, families, oncology professionals and concerned individuals.

The Michigan Chapter collaborates with a number of local organizations to co-sponsor the following support groups.

  • Leukemia Family Support Group
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit (Royal Oak) co-sponsor this monthly group for individuals with any type of leukemia.  Join others living with leukemia to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the second Thursday of every month. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Lymphoma Family Support Group                                                         The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit (Royal Oak) co-sponsor this monthly group for individuals with any type of lymphoma.  Join others living with lymphoma to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the first Wednesday of every month.   • Myeloma Family Support Group     
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit (Royal Oak) co-sponsor this monthly group for individuals with any type of myeloma.  Join others living with myeloma to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the third Thursday of every month.   • Parents of Kids with Cancer  
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit (Royal Oak) co-sponsor this monthly group for parents who have a child with cancer.  Join other parents to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the fourth Monday of every month.   • Young Adults with Cancer
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit (Royal Oak) co-sponsor this bi-monthly group for young adults (ages 18 to 35) with any type of cancer.  Join others living cancer to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the first and third Tuesday of every month.   • Women with Blood Cancer
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Weisberg Cancer Center (Farmington Hills) co-sponsor this weekly group for women who have any type of blood cancer. This group meets each Tuesday. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Men with Blood Cancer
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Weisberg Cancer Center (Farmington Hills) co-sponsor this bi-monthly group for men who have any type of blood cancer. This group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Families Facing Blood Cancer
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Weisberg Cancer Center (Farmington Hills) co-sponsor this weekly group for families who have any type of blood cancer. This group meets each Tuesday. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Life After Transplant Support Group
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and The National Bone Marrow Transplant Link co-sponsor this monthly group for adults who have undergone a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Participants learn the latest information and have an opportunity to discuss the unique issues faced by those who have had a transplant. Family members are welcome.   • Blood Cancer Discussion and Support Group
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (Ann Arbor) co-sponsor this bi-monthly group for adults who have any type of blood cancer. This group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (Ann Arbor) co-sponsor this weekly group for adults who have had or will have a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. This group meets every Monday. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.
  • Blood Cancer Family Support Group
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids co-sponsor this monthly group for individuals with any type of blood cancer.   Join others living cancer to share information and gain encouragement.  This group meets the first Monday. First Connection

First Connection is a peer-to-peer support program that gives patients and their families the opportunity to gain encouragement from a survivor who has been through a similar experience. The Michigan Chapter utilizes volunteers who have been carefully screened and have received formal and on-going training. These volunteers speak with individuals in need of support and encouragement.

Individuals who are diagnosed with a blood cancer are eligible to receive limited financial assistance to help defray the costs of transportation, specific medications and certain treatments. Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.

Patient Education

A number of patient education programs including: Great Lakes Blood Cancer Conference;Exploring Myeloma; Cancer Clinical Trials; Meet the Expert on Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma; Breaking Through the Age Barrier and Meet the Doctor are offered free of charge to help bring treatment options into clearer focus and to strengthen decision-making and coping skills for patients and their families. Public Information

The Michigan Chapter has a wealth of information on blood cancers and available treatments. Free booklets, fact sheets and numerous publications are available through a chapter-based lending library. Another information program is The Trish Greene Back to School Program for Children with Cancer. This program is designed to streamline a young patient's re-entry into school by coordinating the efforts of the medical team, school personnel, family and the student body.  Please contact the chapter at (800) 456-5413 for details.

Advocacy

If you are looking for an opportunity to advocate on behalf of individuals diagnosed with a blood cancer, here is your chance. On a daily basis, the Society works to promote increased federal funding for biomedical research and healthcare reform issues. This is an ongoing effort, and we are always in need of advocates to help make our voice louder and stronger.

Honored Heroes

Somewhere along the line, all of us who have had a diagnosis of cancer have been told that we are a hero and a survivor. The title is an expression from those around us of the great accomplishment and struggle that we have been through. We have become a symbol of strength and inspiration for others as they deal with the hurdles in their lives.

What does The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society honored hero do?

• Shares his/her story in writing, in person and through photos
• Appears at special Society events
• Sends letters and motivational cards to those participating in Society events
• Becomes a speaker at a Society event
• Conducts media interviews

What are the benefits of becoming an honored hero?
• All heroes receive a welcome kit filled with a commemorative shirt, hat and other information
• Heroes and their families receive tickets to local events as they are available
• Opportunities to participate in music videos, parties and other fun events

Who can become an honored hero?
• Anyone who has been diagnosed with a blood cancer - both patients and survivors
