Polo for the Cure

Our annual Polo for the Cure will be galloping into Stom Hollow Farm Field, Ligonier, PA, on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009. Teams from Dusseldorf, Germany and Ligonier, PA will take to the polo field in a high-goal match. The ultimate winners of the match are the researchers and patients who received support in our area, with over $175,000 expected to be raised through the 2009 event.

Guests at this event will enjoy an afternoon of grand buffets, silent auctions, entertainment, raffles and an exciting international polo match. You never know what unique items you will come across on the auction block. The list of exciting packages and spectacular get-aways will give guests more than enough choices to bid on.

The halftime show is sure to be exciting, kicking off wiith the parading of the hounds by The Joint Masters of the Rolling Rock Hunt, Additionally, guests will be invited onto the field for a traditional stomping of the divots and a special "messages of hope" balloon release.

Over the past 15 years, Polo for the Cure has raised more than $1 million to assist The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's efforts to increase its research and patient aid programs.

Tent or table sponsorship, individual tickets, program advertisements or donation of an item for the event's silent auction would all be greatly appreciated and help to insure a success!

About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The Society's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $600 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.

History of How it Started:
In the mid-1940s, when the de Villiers family lost their son, Robert, to acute leukemia, the only thing known for certain about the disease was that it was fatal. It was a dark time for the distraught family, but the de Villiers were visionaries. They believed that if ignorance took their son, then knowledge was the key to preventing other families from suffering the same loss. They began a new research foundation in 1949, with a small budget and a group of volunteers, and saw a path from their personal darkness into the light.  Today, the organization that grew from that small foundation is a beacon for patients who are fighting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The story of that transformation is inspirational, filled with persistent belief in the possibility of unseen cures and fired by the progress that has been made — the therapeutic innovations, dramatic increases in survival and, more recently, the discovery of targeted drugs that, for some patients, have produced the gift of continuing life.
