The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's National Capital Area Chapter Announces Local 2009 Man & Woman of the Year

June 15, 2009 - Led by Ari Hausfeld Jones, Moms for a Cure, of Fairfax, Virginia and Hap Peden, IBM, of Rockville, Maryland, 21 local professionals raised $897,235 during the 2009 Man & Woman of the Year campaign to benefit the National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

During the ten-week fundraising campaign, which began on April 1, the candidates were judged on their success in raising money to help LLS fund research to find cures, better therapies and provide support to blood cancer patients and their families.

Every dollar raised counts as one "vote." Jones and Peden were the female and male candidates with the most "votes," and were awarded the title of 2009 Man & Woman of the Year at the Grand Finale Gala on June 13. Jones raised more than $139,000 while Peden brought in more than $93,000.

The candidates competed in honor of LLS's Boy & Girl of the Year, Alessandro Valeri (age 8) and Megan Avery (age 6), two local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.

"LLS congratulates all of the candidates in the 2009 Man & Woman of the Year campaign. Each of them used their passion and determination to raise funds that give thousands of people battling blood cancers the chance to live better, longer lives and they are all champions," said Donna McKelvey, Executive Director of the National Capital Area Chapter. "This is a campaign that celebrates not only the individual accomplishments, but also the collective success of all these amazing candidates."

Man of the Year candidates, Rodney Beverly and Andrew Kepley were also honored for their fundraising efforts and were named first and second runner up, respectively. As for the Women of the Year candidates, both Jennifer Keating and Lindsey Scott were awarded with the first and second runner up titles, respectively.

In addition to the announcement of the two top spots, the National Capital Area Chapter would also like to highlight the efforts of eight candidates who raised more than $50,000 and will be awarded with an LLS research grant named in their honor. Those candidates are: Rodney Beverly, Dani Greene, Ari Hausfeld Jones, Jennifer Keating, Sarah Milligan, Nadine Namoff, Hap Peden and Lindsey Scott.

"I speak for this campaign not only as the co-chair, but also as a blood cancer survivor," said Ken Dineen, event co-chair and Global Managing Director, Public Health Industry for Accenture. "Year after year I am consistently amazed by the tireless efforts of our candidates and this year has proven no different. With our largest pool of candidates to date, these folks showed no signs of slowing in the face of tough economic reports and their dedication toward raising money for lifesaving cancer research never diminished."

Three Citizenship Awards were also given out to acknowledge the candidates who have significantly advanced the efforts to cure blood cancers by making exemplary contributions throughout their campaign. The campaign's Leadership Team and peers reviewed each nomination and voted for the person who exemplified creativity, passion outreach and leadership throughout the 10 weeks. The Mission Award was presented to Nadine Namoff and MaryJo Robinson. The Volunteerism Award was presented to Jennifer Keating. The Community Outreach Award was presented to Jones.

The evening included a silent auction, seated dinner and dancing. In addition, the Adeler Jewelers' Jewel in the Box auction kept guests bidding on mystery boxes placed at their tables. At the end of the evening, the highest bidders at each of the tables were directed to open their mystery boxes, in unison, to reveal either a limited edition LLS Courage pendant or the grand prize jewel, a custom-designed necklace valued at $4,350.

The program was co-emceed by WMZQ Morning Host, Brian Egan, and WJLA Good Morning Washington Anchor, Alison Starling. The 2009 campaign was co-chaired by Dineen and Allison Gurnitz of Coray Gurnitz Consulting.

Along with Accenture, the campaign was supported by the following sponsors: Diamond Sponsor: Hausfeld, LLP; Gold Sponsors: National Association of Broadcasters and Citrix Systems, Inc.; Silver Sponsors: Brayboy Creative Media, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, CISCO Systems, Ernst & Young, Feinberg Rozen, LLP, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Otsuka American Pharmaceuticals and The Marketing Showcase, LLC. 16 DC-Area Professionals Raise More than $785,000 in 10 Weeks; Two Local Cancer Survivors Take Top Honors

Alexandria, VA - Led by two blood cancer survivors, Chartese Burnett of the Washington Nationals Baseball Club, and Jim Galvenek of Gensler, 16 local professionals raised more than $785,000 during the 10-week campaign to benefit the National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The 2008 Man and Woman of the Year Campaign presented by Accenture in association with Land Rover America's Polo Cup has an expansive title as well as a history of excellence, but its mission is simple: raise money to find a cure for blood cancers and to improve the lives of patients and families in just 10 weeks.

The elegant grand finale gala, held on Saturday at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, marked the finish of a fundraising competition that launched on April 10 and highlighted the extraordinary achievements of its 16 candidates, who were cheered on by more than 400 family members, friends, campaign teams and supporters.

"The efforts of our 16 candidates are even more extraordinary when you consider the fact that none of them are professional fundraisers and all have successfully juggled demanding careers and personal lives in order to raise money for the Society's mission," said Donna McKelvey, Executive Director of the National Capital Area Chapter. "What makes tonight's results even more noteworthy is the fact that our Man and Woman of the Year winners are blood cancer survivors. Both Chartese and Jim, in their cancer journey and their dedication toward finding a cure, are an inspiration to us all."

The top three contenders for the 2008 Man of the Year; winner Galvenek; first runner up, Dan Cole of Consumer Electronics Association; and second runner up, Scott Newman of Edison Worldwide, each raised more than $110,000, a first for the campaign.

The three top female candidates were: winner Burnett; first runner up, Andrea Van Dell of LEX on Demand; and second runner up, Lindsey Threlkeld of Accenture.
