Advocacy

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society advocates public policy positions that accelerate progress toward cures for leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma.

The aim of the Society's advocacy program is to improve the quality of life of those with blood cancer, their friends and families. Critical elements of this effort are:

  • Ensuring patients access to high quality healthcare
  • Creating a positive climate for research into leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Dwayne Howell (left), President and CEO, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, attended the White House-signing ceremony of the Hematological Cancer Research and Education Investment Act. He stands with President George W. Bush (center) and U.S. Rep. Philip M. Crane (R-IL), a sponsor of the landmark legislation.

The Society endorses:

  • Increased federal funding for biomedical research
  • Collaborative public-private sector research efforts
  • Patient protection legislation that guarantees all healthcare consumers certain fundamental rights, including the right to care in a clinical trial

To advance its policy goals, the Society encourages its volunteers, friends and other supporters to contact their elected representatives - in Congress and in state legislatures - to share with them the impact that leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma have on millions of Americans each year and to urge responsible policies that will address the serious burdens of these diseases.
