IRC Question of the Month
Q&A

Q: I was diagnosed with leukemia and it would help me to talk to someone who living with my disease.  Is this type of support available for me and my family?

A: Many people who are diagnosed with leukemia are anxious because at first, it's hard to know what to expect or how to cope day-to-day. Worry about one's family is another common reaction. Please know that you are not alone and support is available. LLS provides support for patients and their family members at every stage of diagnosis and treatment.

First Connection is a program that will put you in touch with a trained peer volunteer who has "been there." This may help you to cope with the stresses of your diagnosis and treatment. Family members are also eligible for this free program.

Patient and Family Support Groups are offered through local LLS chapters. These groups offer comfort and understanding to patients and their families. Patients, family members and friends affected by leukemia or another blood cancer are invited to attend free of charge at local LLS chapters.

Please contact the Patient Services Manager at your local LLS chapter to find out more about First Connection and Family Support Groups. To find your local chapter, visit www.LLS.org.  Enter your ZIP code at the top right of the Web page and click on Chapter Finder.

LLS offers more support via our Web site.

The LLS Blood Cancer Discussion Boards are peer-to-peer support online communities where you can exchange ideas and experiences, pose questions and offer support. The Discussion Boards can be accessed by clicking here.
